Technical SEO: make the site crawlable before anything else

Every SEO strategy stands or falls on the technical foundation. Webflow gives you clean HTML, fast CDN hosting, and auto-generated sitemaps out of the box; which puts you ahead of most platforms before you write a single line of custom code. What it doesn't give you: structured data, proper canonical tags across CMS-generated pages, hreflang for multi-language sites, custom 404 handling that preserves link equity, and programmatic internal linking at scale.

I audit every page on the crawl path: robots.txt and sitemap accuracy, canonical consistency across paginated and filtered views, heading hierarchy (one H1, no skipped levels), image alt coverage, Core Web Vitals (LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms, CLS under 0.1), and mobile rendering parity. The audit produces a ranked list; critical blockers first, quick wins second, nice-to-haves last; so you're not guessing what to fix.

Programmatic SEO

Land pages at scale that Google actually indexes

When you need hundreds or thousands of landing pages; service × city grids, product × use-case directories, integration × stack comparisons; hand-building them one at a time is a non-starter. Programmatic SEO is the answer: design the keyword matrix, structure the dataset in Airtable, build one Webflow CMS template with conditional visibility, and let the data drive page generation on publish.

The difference between a programmatic site that ranks and one Google files under "thin content" is per-page unique substance. I pull unique data per page; city-specific reviews, product-specific FAQs, related items; and make the internal link graph dense so each page earns its way in the index. Pages that don't earn impressions after 90 days get noindexed or consolidated, not left to rot. The keyword matrix is a hypothesis, not a deliverable.

Conversion rate optimisation

CRO: instrument, baseline, test, log, repeat

Traffic without conversion is just an electricity bill. Most "CRO problems" turn out to be instrumentation problems; untracked CTAs, mis-firing events, two analytics tools disagreeing about the same number. Before any test runs, I audit what's being measured, fix the gaps, and baseline the funnel for at least two weeks so every later test has a clean starting line.

Every test changes exactly one variable, is grounded in actual user behaviour (session replays, form analytics, heatmaps; not gut feel), and runs for at least one full business cycle. Client-side A/B tools are fast to set up but introduce a flicker that hurts Core Web Vitals and can swamp the lift you're measuring. For anything more invasive than copy, I move the experiment to a Cloudflare Worker that picks the variant at the edge; no flicker, no client-side JS overhead, page stays fully cacheable.

The highest-leverage CRO artefact is the decision log. Every test ships with a hypothesis, a result (winner, loser, inconclusive), and a note on what to test next. Losers matter as much as winners; they kill weak hypotheses cheaply and prevent re-litigation. The feedback loop

How SEO and CRO compound each other

Most teams run SEO and CRO in silos; the SEO person optimises titles and builds backlinks, the CRO person runs A/B tests on the checkout flow, and nobody connects the two. The result: high-traffic pages that convert at 1% because the SEO team never saw the conversion data, and high-converting pages that get 50 visitors a month because the CRO team never saw the keyword opportunity.

I connect them through a shared data layer. Keyword-intent data informs both content decisions and conversion hypotheses; a page ranking for "best X for small business" needs different social proof and pricing framing than a page ranking for "enterprise X solution." Conversion data feeds back into SEO priorities; pages with high traffic and low conversion get optimisation priority over pages that already convert well but lack volume. The instrumentation layer (GA4, PostHog, Plausible, whatever you use) serves both disciplines from the same clean baseline.

The compound effect is real. By month three of running SEO and CRO as one loop, you're adding more traffic AND converting a higher percentage of it. That's not two separate wins; it's a multiplier. Core Web Vitals: where SEO and CRO collide

Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS) sit at the exact intersection of SEO and CRO. They're ranking signals; Google uses them directly in page experience scoring. They're also conversion drivers; a 100ms improvement in LCP correlates with measurable conversion lifts across e-commerce and SaaS funnels. And they're where bad CRO tooling does the most damage: client-side A/B scripts that inject JavaScript before the page renders can add 500ms+ to LCP, tanking both your rankings and your conversion rate in one move.

I treat Core Web Vitals as a shared KPI across SEO and CRO work. Every test variant gets a Web Vitals check before launch; if the variant lifts conversion but degrades LCP, it doesn't ship until the performance impact is either eliminated or server-side routed. The instrumentation tracks Vitals per variant so you can see whether a conversion win came at a performance cost. Most of the time, the fastest variant also converts best; speed is a conversion feature, not just an SEO checkbox.

Yes; and you should. SEO brings the traffic; CRO converts it. Running them separately means you're either sending traffic to a leaky funnel or optimising a page nobody sees. I baseline both together: technical SEO audit and analytics instrumentation happen in parallel week one, then page-level optimisation targets high-traffic, low-conversion pages first so every improvement earns revenue. The two disciplines share the same data layer; keyword intent data informs both content decisions and conversion hypotheses.

Indirectly, yes; and in ways most teams miss. Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS) are ranking signals, and client-side A/B testing tools that inject JavaScript before the page renders can tank your LCP score, which drags down rankings. Two tracks, two timelines. CRO results show fast; a well-trafficked page resolves a single-variable test in 2-4 weeks, and winners ship immediately. SEO takes longer: technical fixes show in days to weeks, content and authority signals take 3-6 months, and programmatic landing pages follow the same crawl-index-rank cycle as any new page. The overlap is where the ROI lives: while SEO builds, CRO ensures every visitor who arrives converts at the highest rate the page can sustain. By month three, you're compounding; more traffic, higher conversion per visitor.

Yes; but only if you configure it. Out of the box, Webflow gives you clean HTML, fast hosting, auto-generated sitemaps, and editable meta tags and Open Graph fields per page. That's a strong foundation. What it doesn't give you automatically: structured data (JSON-LD schema), proper canonical tags across CMS-generated pages, custom 404 handling that preserves link equity, hreflang for multi-language sites, and programmatic internal linking. These are the layers I add on every build. The platform is fine; it's the configuration and discipline that determine whether you rank.

You can, but you shouldn't with traditional A/B tools because search engines see both variants and canonical confusion erodes rankings. The right approach is a before-and-after methodology: deploy the change site-wide, let Google recrawl (days to a week), then compare CTR and rankings against the baseline period. For high-risk changes like title tag rewrites on money pages, I test on lower-traffic pages first, measure the directional impact, then roll out to the pages that matter. If the change loses, you revert; the crawl lag is the cost, and it's cheaper than confusing Google with split pages.

Regular SEO optimises pages you already have. Programmatic SEO creates pages you didn't have; hundreds or thousands of them; from structured data. Think service × city landing pages, product × use-case directories, or integration × stack comparison grids. The methodology is different: you're designing a keyword matrix, building one template that renders from CMS data, injecting per-page schema, and managing the sitemap at scale. The trap is thin content; shipping every cell of the matrix without unique substance per page. I only ship cells with real search demand and unique data, and prune pages that don't earn impressions within 90 days.
